Community Outreach VISTA 2021-22

DownCity Design is seeking a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA member for a one-year stipended service commitment from August 31st 2021 - August 30th, 2022. The Community Outreach VISTA will help DownCity Design share the stories of the extraordinary service learning, creative problem-solving, and community building work of our youth designers. This AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer will help us document and describe our work in visually engaging ways with our existing students, alumni, friends and fans, and will help us to expand our reach to new audiences and generate support for our mission. The Community Outreach VISTA will also support our fundraising efforts by creating compelling campaign materials, tracking donations in our database, and researching and preparing grant proposals.

Location: DownCity Design (425 West Fountain Street, Providence, RI); Possible remote telework

 
 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Communications:

  • Share DCD’s work via social media, including management of our social media accounts

  • Draft an engaging and informative monthly e-newsletter 

  • Draft press releases for project unveilings and maintain network of press contacts

  • Update DCD website regularly with news and projects

  • Create communication pieces for student recruitment, including brochures and posters

  • Document in-person and online programs through photo, video, and other creative means

Fundraising:

  • Help develop annual campaign and capital campaign materials

  • Assist with grant proposals and reports

  • Manage donor database and generate reports

  • Maintain relationships with current corporate sponsors

  • Research potential donors and funders

Volunteer Recruitment and Retention:

  • Develop tools for tracking volunteers

  • Outreach efforts to attract new volunteers

  • Communicate regularly with volunteers to keep them engaged

Skills required:

DownCity Design seeks a creative individual who can think strategically to implement long-term systems for program documentation, communications, and fundraising. 

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills

  • Organization and professionalism

  • Openness to creative collaboration and working as a team

  • Ability to adapt quickly and work remotely or independently as needed

  • Ability to plan for long-term projects and design strategies for implementation

  • Graphic design and photo/video documentation skills strongly preferred

  • Comfort with Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign

    • Other digital media skills (video, animation, audio, etc.) are a plus

  • Comfort with data collection, entry, and analysis

  • Excellent writing and research skills

  • Excitement about project-based learning and social practice

 
 

Note:  AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program under the Corporation for National and Community Service designed specifically to fight poverty. The VISTA member commits to serve full-time for one full year at a nonprofit organization and receives a living stipend totaling approximately $12,456.08 for those twelve months of service. Upon successful completion of the term of service, the Member also receives either an education award of approximately $6,195 or cash award of $1,800. Program VISTA 2021-22

DownCity Design is seeking a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA member for a one-year stipended service commitment from August 31, 2021 - August 30, 2022. The Program VISTA will help DownCity Design share the stories of the extraordinary service learning, creative problem-solving, and community building work of our youth designers. This AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer will help expand our capacity to provide free youth design programs at Providence Career & Technical Academy (PCTA). The DownCity Design Studio at PCTA is a network of after school programs, including design programs and student-led clubs that offer students opportunities to learn design thinking skills, try out new activities, meet new friends, and share their ideas.

Working with the PCTA Site Director, the DCD Program VISTA will help design and implement new and improved administrative supports and systems to assure programs run smoothly. The new systems developed by our Program VISTA will help open up opportunities and experiences for our young people, increasing their likelihood of succeeding in college and/or careers.

Location: Providence Career + Technical Academy (41 Fricker Street, Providence, RI 02903); Possible remote telework

 

Skills required: 

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills

  • Organization and professionalism

  • Experience working with high school students is a plus

  • Spanish language ability is strongly preferred

  • Openness to creative collaboration and working as a team, as well as working independently

  • Ability to adapt quickly and work remotely or independently as needed

  • Consistency and reliability

  • Comfort with Microsoft Word and Excel as well as Google Drive

  • Other digital media skills (video, animation, audio, etc.) are a plus

  • Comfort with data collection, entry, and analysis, including conducting and analyzing surveys

  • Excitement about project-based learning and social practice

  • Excitement about brainstorming new ways to engage our students, families, and educators 

  • Ability to be outgoing and communicate about programs with students, staff, teachers, educators, and families

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design systems for coordination of studio schedules, field trips, and program events

  • Document programs in action with high quality photographs and video

  • Develop new ways to communicate about programs with students, families, and teachers through digital, print materials, and outreach events

  • Improve current supply and equipment tracking and inventory systems, keep program supplies organized and stocked, and communicate with design educators and club mentors to ensure that all programs have necessary supplies 

  • Improve systems for collecting, organizing, and input of student data and paperwork

  • Track student attendance daily and create monthly attendance reports

  • Collect and input student surveys to evaluate the impact of our programs

  • Analyze assessment data to identify trends, impacts and emerging needs and create reports that include qualitative and quantitative data

  • Plan recruitment events where students can learn more about after school programs, as well as family engagement events, including workshops, community events and end of session celebrations

  • Help to foster a positive environment so that students, family, and staff feel welcomed and included in our programs
